Being a model for a creative photoshoot is an exhilarating experience that requires both physical preparation and mental readiness. Whether you're an aspiring model or a seasoned professional, each photoshoot presents a unique opportunity to showcase your versatility and artistic expression. As someone who has been on both sides of the camera, I’d love to share some key ideas that I believe will help you shine during your creative photoshoot:
The Concept: The theme of the photoshoot. You may have decided to work collaboratively on the theme or are using the sole vision of the creative director. Either way, familiarize yourself with the mood boards, discuss ideas with the photographer, and understand the narrative or emotion you're expected to convey. This understanding will guide your poses, expressions, and overall performance during the shoot.
The Body: I find that modelling can sometimes be somewhat physically demanding in the sense that you are required to be in control of your poses and facial expressions. Doing some light stretching or any other movement that allows you to feel embodied will make all the difference. As someone who has been on both sides of the camera, I would say “loosening up” is most often the goal, to look and feel “natural” comes first from within. I try to get into a meditative and relaxed, yet energised state.
In the days leading up to the shoot, focus on good nutrition, hydration, and adequate rest.
I like to do as much preparation in the days leading up to the shoot, so that I can be present and enjoy the creative process while modelling. Of course, there will always be a million and one things to do - just do your best! Enjoy the process.
The Pose: Pose practice is essential for any model. Experiment with different poses in front of a mirror to understand your best angles and expressions. Pay attention to your posture, facial expressions, and body language. I personally practise transitions between poses slowly, much like a yoga sequence. You may also practise fast, dynamic transitions depending on the theme of your photoshoot.
The Energy: On the day of the photoshoot, arrive with a positive mindset and ready to collaborate. Confidence in your abilities and enthusiasm for the project will translate into captivating photographs. Be open to direction from the photographer while also contributing your own creative ideas.
The Process: Above all, remember to have fun and enjoy the creative process. Modelling is about expressing yourself and bringing life to a vision. Embrace the excitement of collaborating with a talented team and creating stunning images that capture your unique style and personality.
